Open Minds:
The project “Open Minds” was being implemented in partnership with Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR) London, in selected schools and madrasas in districts Peshawar and Charsadda of NWFP from 2008 to 2009.
Due to the nature of the project and the significant positive impact it had on the young minds of students, IWPR decided to re initiate the project with minor changes in selected districts and with selected partners as a 6month pilot phase.
he project aim is to provide students with knowledge about various social and political issues in order to enable them to form their own opinions, free from prejudice, to help them form analytical and discussion skills to help them develop confidence in expressing their views and to give them the power to have their views disseminated internationally reducing feelings that violence is the only way to make a difference to their lives and communities.
Discussion Forums are held fortnightly in each institution to discuss various social and political issues e.g. universal human rights, rule of law, security of citizens, terrorism, Islam & governance etc. with an objective to counter radicalization, extremism and violent tendencies among young people.
Briefing papers are distributed ahead of the Discussion Forum to the selected students for background information. Experts are invited to speak on various issues. Question and answer sessions are held after the experts expressed their views. Such interactive discussions provide an opportunity to the students to ask questions arising in their minds relating to, for instance, terrorism, violence, inequality etc. For further details , visit www.openminds.org.pk
