engaging & empowering citizens for a sustainable future
Open Mind:
The project “Open Minds” is being implemented in partnership with Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR) London, in selected schools and madrasas in districts Peshawar and Charsadda of NWFP.
The project aims to provide training in journalism to young people aged 10-19 years. Media experts are training selected students in journalism with an objective to detach young people from violence, and views that support violence by giving them:
Knowledge about various social and political issues in order to enable them to form their own opinions, free from prejudice.
Analytical and discussion skills to help them develop confidence in expressing their views.
Power to have their views heard and published in nationwide newspapers, reducing feelings that violence is the only way to make a difference to their lives and communities.
Discussion Forums are held fortnightly in each institution to discuss various social and political issues e.g. universal human rights, rule of law, security of citizens, terrorism, Islam & governance etc. with an objective to counter radicalization, extremism and violent tendencies among young people.
Briefing papers are distributed ahead of the Discussion Forum to the selected students for background information. Experts are invited to speak on various issues. Question and answer sessions are held after the experts have expressed their views. Such interactive discussions provide an opportunity to the students to ask questions arising in their minds relating to, for instance, terrorism, violence, inequality etc
